Heat Protection Advice for Postal Workers

summer postal uniformsIt’s hot outside, and postal workers are among those who are forced to endure the unpleasant conditions. As a postal uniform vendor, we are often asked for lighter-weight, moisture-wicking uniforms, or other options that can help the letter carriers be more comfortable on the job. In addition, Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s¬†Campaign to Prevent Heat Illness in Outdoor Workers has provided a great amount of advice on the subject, including the following tips to prevent heat related illness and fatalities:

  • Drink water every 15 minutes, even if you are not thirsty.
  • Rest in the shade to cool down.
  • Wear a hat and light-colored clothing.
  • Learn the signs of heat illness and what to do in an emergency.
  • Keep an eye on fellow workers.
  • “Easy does it” on your first days of work in the heat. You need to get used to it.
