Postal Uniform History 1887In 1887, Postal Laws and Uniform Regulations approved the optional use of a helmet and required letter carriers to wear numbered badges on their hat, cap, or helmet. The postal uniform regulations described the badge as having “nickel-plated figures nine-sixteenths of an inch in length, surmounted by a metallic wreath,” but variations in badge design soon emerged.
